Uniquely Made

Since we moved to Alaska, our family has had an annual snow contest every year. We each pick the date we think the first snow will fall. We have a few rules. The snow must cover the ground at our house; flurries don’t count. Snow that sticks on the ground further up the mountain but not in our yard, doesn’t count. A dusting that sticks in only one part of the yard, but not all of it, doesn’t count. Whoever gets closest to the actual date (even if it’s past the date) wins. The winner gets to choose where the whole family goes out to eat and has bragging rights for the rest of the year. We all win because we get to eat out and have fun spending time together as a family.

No matter when the first snow occurs, it’s always a magical time. Watching those fat, fluffy flakes swirl to the ground makes all of us excited, even if we aren’t quite ready for summer to end. Thoughts of relaxing by the fire, drinking hot chocolate, and reading a good book make us happy.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, snowflakes are formed when a water droplet freezes onto a particle of dust or pollen creating an ice crystal. As it falls more water vapor freezes onto it, forming even more ice crystals. The temperature and humidity at which the crystal forms cause the shape differences. No two snowflakes are exactly alike because “individual snowflakes all follow slightly different paths from the sky to the ground —and thus encounter slightly different atmospheric conditions along the way. Therefore, they all tend to look unique, resembling everything from prisms and needles to the familiar lacy pattern.” (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2022)

Just like snowflakes, every single person is uniquely made. We were all created in the image of God, but we have all been given different gifts, talents, personalities, and physical traits. We have each followed individual paths and encountered unique situations along the way. Our families, environments, and experiences shape us, as well as our beliefs, culture, and habits.

You are the ONLY person just like you. That is amazing!

Psalm 139:13-14 (NIV) says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

Each snowflake is beautiful and unique but when combined with other snowflakes, the change in the landscape can be dramatic. The same is true for us. Each human is beautiful and unique, but when we combine our efforts with others we can change the whole environment. What incredible things we could accomplish for the Kingdom of God when we work together. Yes, we have differences, but that’s what makes us beautiful. United in Christ we can fulfill the call to spread His Good News to all the world.

God created you exactly how He wanted you to be. You are one of His works, and His works are wonderful. YOU ARE WONDERFUL! As I mentioned in the last blog post, you have a place to fit in perfectly. (click here if you missed it) God made you special, unique, and incredibly valuable. Let’s join together to bring hope and encouragement to a needy world.
