God Won’t Forget You Forget-Me-Nots
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion on the child she has borne? Though she may forget, I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands…” IS 49:15-16a (NIV)
Do you know what your state flower is? The state flower of Alaska is the Forget-Me-Not. Isn’t that a funny name? Though the name is unusual, the flower is beautiful with blue petals. Hybrids have been developed to make other colors such as pink and white, but their true color is blue. They are tiny plants that are easily overlooked because they are so small.
A European legend says a knight in shining armor and his love were walking along a riverbank when the knight stopped to pick a bouquet of flowers for his love. He lost his balance and fell into the river. As he fell, he threw the bouquet to his love calling out, “Forget me not!”
Our focus verse says God will not forget us, and he has engraved us on the palms of his hands. What a wonderful promise to know he will never forget us. The God of the universe who knows each star by name (Psalm 147:4) will not forget us.
God doesn’t want us to forget him either. I Corinthians 11:23b-25 says, “The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
Jesus did not want his disciples, or us, to forget him or what he did for us. He told us to remember his sacrifice. He suffered humiliation, pain, and death on the cross so we could be with him forever.
I want to remember him every day, not just when I celebrate communion at church. How about you? We can sacrifice our time to give something beautiful to the Lord, just like the knight sacrificed his life to give flowers to his love. Sacrifice is costly, time-consuming, and hard work but provides life and joy. Hebrews 12:2b says, “Jesus…who for the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God…” (NIV) Jesus endured pain by focusing on the joy he would feel when he could be with us. He loved us enough to endure the suffering. He will not forget us.
How can you remember Jesus and what he has done for you?
Why won’t God forget you?
What other Bible verses tell you God knows and loves you?
Prayer: Dear Father, thank you so much for the promise that you will never forget me. Please help me to remember what you have done for me every day.
